GUWAHATI: Combating crimes by the Assam Police has shown an impressive improvement in all indicators – right from the filing of FIRs to submitting charge sheets and from submitting charge sheets to giving justice.
According to the data of the Assam Police, the crime rate in the state per lakh population was 379 in 2021 and 116.8 in July 2026, registering a decrease of 69 per cent. The speedy disposal of cases has lessened the burden of investigation. The number of cases registered in the state was 1,33,239 in 2021, and the number of cases registered until July 2026 was 25,014, the data said.
The number of pending cases in the state was 1,33,239 in 2021, and it fell to 10,136 until July 2026, registering a reduction of 93 per cent due to speedy disposal of cases.
According to the data, the rate of submission of charge sheets in the state was 34.3 per cent in 2022, and it increased to 86.65 per cent by July 2026, registering a 2.5-fold increase. Likewise, the conviction rate in the state was 5.5 per cent in 2022, against 29.32 per cent until July 2026. The conviction rate in July 2026 alone is 38.1 per cent, which is the highest-ever monthly conviction rate in the state.
In his reaction to the development in policing, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said on social media, “Assam’s war against crimes and criminals has received daring results. Due to the relentless efforts of the Assam Police, the justice delivery system in the state has gained might and momentum from lodging FIRs to submitting charge sheets and from submitting charge sheets to delivering justice. Our fight against crimes will continue, without compromise under any circumstances.”
