GUWAHATI: The age-old land survey system in Assam is all set to undergo transformations with the Assam government adopting modern technology in this process. The decision has been taken to expedite the land survey process across the State.

Owing to the time-consuming system of the presently followed land survey system, 1,030 villages across the State had remained unsurveyed earlier. As a result, the residents of these hamlets — termed as ‘non-cadestal’ — have also been encountering many problems. For instance, they have been deprived of land pattas.

Following the change of guards at Dispur in May 2016, the Sonowal government took measures to carry out detailed land survey in these non-cadestal villages across Assam, and covered approximately 130 of such hamlets.

As part of the modern land-survey system, the State government has opted for ETS (Electronic Total Station) and DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System). The land surveyors under the Revenue & Disaster Management Department have been also trained in these modern land survey systems in a phased manner.
