Assam: Gunotsav 2023 marks to be added in annual exams

Department of School Education notified that the schedule of Guntotsav will be incorporated in the academic calendar so that schools could be aware about the programme.

GUWAHATI: The Department of School Education notified on Friday that weightage of 10 per cent marks from Guntosav 2023, which will be held from January 18 to February 18 next year in three phases, will be considered for annual examinations of schools "for ensuring importance of Gunotsav and improvement of quality of education.

The department further notified that the schedule of Guntotsav will be incorporated in the academic calendar so that schools could be aware about the programme.

Earlier, the schools were merely graded according to assessment. From next year, however, students will be awarded some marks which will have 10 per cent weightage in the annual examinations.

As per the schedule for Gunotsav 2023 issued by the office Samagra Shiksha, Assam (SSA), the first phase will cover 13 districts – Barpeta, Karimganj, Golaghat, Hojai, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Morigaon, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, South Salmara-Mankachar, Tinsukia and Udalguri. The self-evaluation part of schools in these districts will be held on January 18 and the external evaluation will be on January 19, January 20 and January 21.

The second phase will cover 10 districts - Baksa, Chirang, Charaideo, Dhubri, Dima Hasao, Hailakandi, Jorhat, Kamrup (M), Sonitpur and West Karbi Anglong. The self-evaluation part of schools in these districts will be held on February 1 and the external evaluation will be on February 2, February 3 and February 4.

The third phase will also cover 10 districts - Biswanath, Bongaigaon, , Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Karbi Anglong, Cachar, Nalbari and Nagaon. The self-evaluation part of schools in these districts will be held on February 15 and the external evaluation will be on February 16, February 17 and February 18.

It may be mentioned that Gunotsav is a quality-improvement programme where apart from internal assessment, external evaluators are deputed to the schools for conducting scholastic evaluation of students from Class-I to Class-IX. It was adopted by the state government in 2017.

The objective of Gunotsav is to identify learning gaps, ensure learning enhancement and achievement of learning outcomes by all children at the primary level, to assess the performance of schools in areas like curricular, co-curricular, availability and utilization of infrastructure, to indicate learning gaps and to design effective strategies to meet up these gaps, to ensure greater participation of all stakeholders starting from teachers, students, administrators, communities and enhance accountability among them for quality education, and to support the school and education system so as to improve the quality of education and ensure better functioning of schools.

A total of 45,735 schools had participated in Gunotsav 2022.
