GUWAHATI: The high command of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has asked the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) leaders to sink their internal differences and go for a united fight for the 2026 Assembly election in the state. The high command has also asked the APCC leadership to issue show-cause notices to the party leaders and cadres who work against the interests of the party.
Speaking to The Sentinel, APCC president Bhupen Borah said, "The recent meeting of state Congress leaders and MPs held in New Delhi in the presence of Rahul Gandhi and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge had a detailed discussion on the ways to fight the 2026 Assembly election in Assam. The meeting laid stress on the ways to motivate party leaders and cadres before the Assembly election in the state. Various sections are out to demoralise Congress workers in Assam."
Borah also said that the party's high command has no plan to change the APCC president right now. Its thrust is on fighting the coming Assembly elections in Assam unitedly. On the opposition coalition in the state, Borah said that the need of the hour is a coalition of all the like-minded parties to defeat the BJP. "However, the alliance should be for the greater interest of the public in the state, not for the interest of any individual. Even there is a meeting of various parties today. Dr. Hiren Gohain and some other prominent personalities are taking the lead," he said.
He said that the Congress believes in secularism, and as such, if any party with a secular mindset comes forward, the party needs to talk to them. For instance, once RSS loyalists RP Sharma and Ashok Sarma are now working under the Congress flag, he said, and added, "If any such leaders want to work with the Congress, we have our door open for them."
On the party leadership in Assam, Borah said, "The party high command has no plan to change the APCC president. As APCC president, I need the help of MPs Gaurav Gogoi, Pradyut Bordoloi, and Rakibul Hussain, Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia, and other state leaders to fight the Assembly poll strongly. This time around, we will name the party candidates six months before the Assembly poll."
When asked about the probable Chief Minister's face in 2026 in Assam, Borah said, "Our priority is to win the election. The decision on the chief minister is up to the party's high command. We will accept the candidate whom the AICC will project as the chief minister."
