GOALPARA: The Goalpara District Administration on Monday carried out a large-scale eviction drive around the Hasila Beel Wetland at the outskirts of Goalpara town and cleared about fifteen hundred bighas of land.

Goalpara DC Khanindra Choudhury, accompanied by SP Navneet Mahanta, along with a large team of police and security personnel, began the process of eviction early in the morning.

The district administration used several excavators and demolished about six hundred illegal constructions and, at the end of the day, cleared about 1500 bighas of land.

“We had already served and circulated eviction notices a few days back to the people who have been living in the areas illegally to vacate the government land. Similar notices were also served last year,” said Khanindra Choudhury, who was personally supervising the entire operation.

He further added that the Beel has huge tourism potential and was already contributing to fish production. Its proper development will bring economic prosperity to the local people, he added.

The Hasila Beel is a riverine wetland known for its dynamic ecosystem, influenced by the Brahmaputra River, and supports a variety of aquatic life and migratory birds. It is also an important resource for local communities, particularly for fishing.

The areas surrounding the Beel were long being occupied by hundreds of families coming from different parts of the district. It is also the main exit route of the flash flood waters of Goalpara municipal areas to the river Brahmaputra.
