Assam: IMD issues red alert in Barak Valley; orange in Dima Hasao

Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued fresh Red alerts for two Barak Valley districts and Orange alerts for Cachar district in Barak Valley and the Dima Hasao district for June 2, with a prediction of heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall in some areas.

The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, issued a special weather bulletin today, with the current meteorological conditions stated as, “The upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam at 0.9 km above mean sea level. Under the influence of the above synoptic condition, moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rain on June 2 & 3, along with thunderstorm and lightning on June 2 & 3, and gusty wind at a speed of 30-40 kmph.”

The forecast and warning for June 2 reads: “Heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hrs) to very heavy rain (12-20 cm in 24 hrs) is very likely to occur at a few places with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (21 cm & more in 24 hrs) over the districts of Hailakandi & Sribhumi districts accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning.” A Red alert has been issued for both Hailakandi and Sribhumi districts in Barak Valley.

Another warning for June 2 says, “Heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rain (12-20 cm in 24 hrs) is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Dima Hasao & Cachar, accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning.” Also, an Orange alert has been issued for Dima Hasao and Cachar districts.

The report also stated the heaviest rainfall recorded in the past 24 hours in the following places—Silchar (district Cachar) 42 cm, Karimganj (district Karimganj) 35 cm, A P Ghat (district Cachar) 32 cm, Algapur Circle AWS (district Hailakandi) 30 cm, Matijuri (district Hailakandi) 30 cm, Panchgram AEGCL (district Hailakandi) 27 cm, Lakhipur (district Cachar) 26 cm, B P Ghat (district Karimganj) 24 cm, Amraghat (district Cachar) 23 cm, and Haflong (district Dima Hasao) 18 cm. 

In light of the severe weather conditions and heavy rainfall in Sribhumi district, the Inspector of Schools in Sribhumi district issued a notice that says all private and government schools are to remain closed on June 2 and 3.
