Guwahati: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert on dense fog across Assam in the period up to December 15, 2024. A drop in the minimum temperature has been experienced in Assam over the last few days, with fog noticed in different places in the state. Even the denizens of Guwahati city are experiencing a bout of cold weather, with the minimum temperature in the city recorded at 12.5 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, which is the season's lowest temperature in Guwahati.
Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Guwahati, in a report, stated, "The cyclonic circulation over Tripura and neighbourhood now lies over South Assam and neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level." The RMC further said that dense fog is very likely to occur in isolated pockets over Assam up to December 15.
The RMC issued a prediction for Assam and adjoining states for Friday, which stated, "Dry weather very likely to prevail over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, & Tripura. Shallow to moderate fog is very likely to occur in isolated pockets over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, & Tripura. No large change in minimum temperature is very likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura."
For Guwahati, the RMC issued an alert for fog or mist in the morning and partly cloudy skies later on in the day, for the period from December 13 to 16.
Regarding the variation in the minimum temperature in the city, there was a drop of 1.4 degrees Celsius from the normal on Wednesday, with the minimum temperature recorded at 12.5 degrees Celsius.
With fog predicted in certain pockets across Assam, those driving at night, especially on the highways, should remain alert for the next few days.
