GUWAHATI/DHUBRI: In the aftermath of the communal tension in the Dhubri district, the Assam government is planning to set up a permanent army camp in the vicinity of the Dhubri town.

After the incident of prohibited meat thrown in front of religious places during Eid, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Dhubri for the second time today. Accompanied by the Chief Secretary, the DGP and the IGP (law and order), he reviewed the law-and-order situation in the district with the district administration. The focus of the meeting was on maintenance of peace and public order.

The Chief Minister said, “Our zero tolerance approach, along with apprehending 150 anti-social elements, is working well. We are not lowering our guard against communal forces. We are also exploring the option to set up a permanent base of the Indian army to strengthen the security apparatus in the district. Discussion with the central government on this matter is underway.”

The Chief Minister said that normalcy has been restored in the town, and efforts are going on to keep the present condition of peace and stability in the district intact. “The elements that threw prohibited meat in the premises of a Hanuman Mandir have been identified, and the main accused has been absconding. We, however, express hope that he will surrender in due course,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that he had made repeated appeals to all not to hurt the religious sentiment of others while celebrating festivals. ”If this understanding becomes a reality, no such communal tension will arise in the state,” he said.
