GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam in September this year to lay the foundation stones and inaugurate several mega projects in Assam, including the birth centenary celebrations of balladeer Dr Bhupen Hazarika.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma met the Prime Minister in New Delhi today and invited him to grace the occasions in Assam. The prime minister accepted the invitation.
The Chief Minister said, “It was my privilege to meet the Prime Minister today. I had the honour of inviting him to Assam as the chief guest for the inaugural ceremony of the year-long birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika to be held on September 8, 2025. The prime minister readily accepted the invitation.”
The Assam cabinet did take a decision to hold the centenary celebrations of Dr Bhupen Hazarika in Guwahati, New Delhi, Kolkata, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The Chief Minister said, “I also took the opportunity to request the Prime Minister’s gracious presence for the inauguration of the Assam Bio Ethanol Plant, with a production capacity of 49 KTPA (Kilo Tonne Per Annum) Ethanol, using 300 KTPA bamboo as feedstock.
The Assam Bio Ethanol Plant is a joint venture where NRL holds the major stake. The primary purpose of ethanol produced at the bio-refinery is to supply NRL for blending with motor spirit, aligning with the national focus on promoting ethanol-blended fuels for a greener environment.
It is expected to benefit around 30,000 rural households across its value chain and create a market linkage for an impressive 5 lakh tonnes of green bamboo annually, generating business opportunities worth around Rs 200 crore.
The Chief Minister said, “I also requested the Prime Minister to lay the foundation stones of two key infrastructure projects – the Rs 5,700-crore Guwahati Ring Road Project and the Rs 572-crore Darrang Medical College and Hospital Project.”
In August 2024, the Union Cabinet approved the Guwahati Ring Road Project that will be built under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer model. Spanning 121 km, the project is designed to enhance connectivity and reduce congestion on major national highways around Guwahati.
