Haflong: Following the coal mine tragedy that has shaken the whole nation, the Dima Hasao District administration started the sealing operation of rat-hole mining in the Kalamati area of Umrangso this morning.

The sealing operation team, comprising Addl. SP and OC, Umrangso Police Station, Senior Manager of AMDC, and other officials, started the operation right from Sunday morning.

The senior manager of AMDC said, “From today, we are sealing all the rat-hole mines near Umrangso. We will also seize all the machines and instruments engaged in rat-hole mining.”

Interestingly, no one belonging to such rat hole mines was present during the seizures.

Dima Hasao police, under the directive of the Assam DGP, have launched a major crackdown on illegal rat-hole coal mining at the Assam coal quarry in Umrangso. As of Sunday, 11 individuals have been arrested in connection with the unlawful mining activities, confirmed Dima Hasao Superintendent of Police (SP) Mayank Kumar. The arrested individuals have been taken to Haflong police station for further interrogation.

According to police sources, the frequency of fatalities at the coal mining site has been alarming. Investigations are expected to uncover additional unreported incidents and identify more individuals involved in the illegal operations.

The arrested individuals have been booked under Umrangso Police Station Case No. 02/2025. Those detained include people from various parts of Dima Hasao and neighbouring districts, indicating a widespread network of illegal mining operations.
