Guwahati: Miffed at the poor performance by students in the recently released results of Semester 3 Bachelor of Arts (BA) Examinations 2024, state Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has laid the blame for this squarely on the colleges, saying it reflects their ‘systemic failures and administrative negligence’.
The education minister has shot off a strongly worded letter to the principals of all government and provincialised colleges, citing the ‘low pass percentage and non-compliance with examination protocols’ and bringing to their attention the disturbingly low pass percentage in the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) Semester 3 Bachelor of Arts (BA) Examinations 2024, as reported by Gauhati University (GU).
Incidentally, the pass percentage before applying grace marks was only 26.22%, and even after awarding generous grace marks, it rose to 58.3%.
The letter cites the report submitted by the Vice Chancellor of GU, according to which several colleges failed to upload Internal, Practical, and End Semester Examination marks within the deadlines, despite repeated notifications. A total of 352 Internal, 239 Practical, and 969 SEC component marks were missing from the SAMARTH portal, resulting in students being wrongly marked as “Absent”. In many cases, incorrect paper selections were verified by college authorities, further jeopardizing student outcomes. These lapses delayed the result publication, caused unjust failures, and triggered unnecessary stress among students and parents.
Ranoj Pegu termed the situation as unacceptable and that it tarnishes the credibility of the state’s higher education system. Calling it a clear dereliction of duty on the part of college administrations, the minister directed the college principals to— undertake an urgent academic audit of all exam-related procedures in their institutions; ensure timely and accurate uploading of all components of marks (Internal, Practical, SEC, and ESE) henceforth; hold responsible faculty and administrative staff accountable for any negligence and report actions taken; and establish a monitoring cell at their colleges to oversee examination, results, and compliance processes.
Urging caution, minister Ranoj Pegu said the academic future of the students cannot be compromised. He asked them to treat the matter with the seriousness it demands and restore institutional discipline and academic integrity without delay.
