Guwahati: Senior IPS officer Gyanendra Pratap Singh on Saturday was appointed by the Centre as the Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), according to a Personnel Ministry order.
GP Singh is a 1991-batch IPS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre and is currently posted as Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP). He was appointed as Assam DGP after the retirement of Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on January 31, 2023.
The order, issued by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Department of Personnel and Training, under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, said, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs for the appointment of Shri G P Singh, IPS (AM:1991), as Director General, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), in level-16 of the pay matrix from the date of assumption of charge of the post, for a tenure up to the date of his superannuation on November 30, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”
Singh will take over charge from the Special DG of the CRPF, Vitul Kumar, who is currently holding officiating charge for the post of DG, CRPF. Kumar was given officiating charge on December 30 last year for the post of DG-CRPF.
GP Singh, who is known for being a tough cop, has also worked with the SPG. Since 2013, he has been on central deputation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), where he served as Inspector General. Though his tenure there was to end in November 2020, he was abruptly rushed back to Assam in December 2019 as ADGP (Law and Order) to help deal with the violent protests that had erupted across the state against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
As Special DGP (Law and Order), Singh also served as Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in Assam and also led the Rhino Protection Task Force constituted by the state government in 2021.
Regarding his appointment, DGP GP Singh told the media, “It is a matter of pride for me that the central government has given me this responsibility. I will carry out my responsibility according to the experience I have gained in Assam. It is my belief that we will be able to do good work in different areas.”
