Guwahati: The charge sheet filing rate and the conviction rate for the accused in Assam have witnessed a sharp rise in the period from 2021 to 2024.
This was revealed by the Assam Police on its social media handle: “The Monthly Crime Review, indicates significant progress across all key indicators on our path to ensuring justice for every citizen. These statistics highlight Assam Police’s commitment to public safety & security under the leadership & guidance of Hon’ble CM Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma Sir.”
According to the statistics of Assam Police, the rate of chargesheet filing increased from 39.40% in 2021 to 66.71% in 2024. Moreover, until March of 2025, the chargesheet filing rate was 75.50%. The year-wise breakdown is given as follows: in 2021 the chargesheet filing rate was 39.40%, in 2022 it was 34.30%, in 2023 it was 52.62%, in 2024 it was 66.71% and in 2025 it was 75.50% until March.
Moreover, the conviction rate also saw a big jump, from 6.1% in 2021 to 22.95% in 2024. In 2025, until the month of March, the conviction rate was 25.33%. To break it down year-wise, in 2021 the conviction rate was 6.1%, in 2022 it was 13.5%, in 2023 it was 16.4%, and in 2024 the conviction rate marked a considerable hike to 22.95%.
As for Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) cases, the charge sheet filing rate from July 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, was 80.4%. A total of 15,585 BNS cases were charge sheeted during the same period.
Regarding the statistics of Assam Police, Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on a social media platform, “Satisfactory statistics are seen in the monthly conference related to the crime of Assam Police—
1) The rate of submission of charge sheets is 75.5% till March.
2) 80.4% of BNS case chargesheeted
3) 19,373 BNS cases disposed of since July
This effort of the citizen-centric system of Assam Police will continue.”
