Assam: State budget for 2025-26 all set for presentation

Guwahati: The government is now all set to table the state's annual budget for the financial year 2025-26 in the state Assembly on March 10. In the past three financial years (FYs), the Assam government spent Rs 3,69,904 crore from the state exchequer.

According to statistics from the finance department, the state's expenditure has gradually increased year-on-year from 2021-22 to 2023-24. The budget estimate of the state government was Rs 1,36,555 crore in 2021-22, and the expenditure was Rs 1,06,304.69 crore. In 2022-23, the budget estimate was Rs 1,56,525.63 crore, and expenditure was Rs 1,27,283.42 crore. In 2023-24, the budget estimate was Rs 1,69,966.13 crore, and expenditure was Rs 1,36,316.69 crore. Thus, the total expenditure in the past three financial years was Rs 3,69,904 crore, against the budget estimate of Rs 4,63,046.76 crore.

The current financial year is coming to an end on March 31, 2025. The budget estimate for the financial year 2024-25 is Rs 1,68,672.95 crore. In the current financial year, the highest allocation of Rs 42,599.92 crore was made for the finance department. Among the works-related departments, the highest allocation of Rs 11,679.06 crore was made for PWD (Roads). The expenditure during the current financial year will be known after the end of the financial year.

The state government is completing the preparations for presenting the budget for the next financial year, which will be effective from April 1, 2025. Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will table the state's annual budget for 2025-26 on March 10 in the Assembly during the ongoing budget session. This will be the last full-fledged budget of the Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, and lots of announcements are expected to be made as the Assembly election in the state is scheduled for 2026.

The Chief Minister and Finance Minister are discussing with different departments to give the final shape to the budget for the next financial year.
