Assam: Tea exported at higher prices in 2025

In the first four months of the current calendar year, India exported 85.77 million kg of tea at a unit price of Rs 292.09 per kg, on average.

Guwahati: In the first four months of the current calendar year, India exported 85.77 million kg of tea at a unit price of Rs 292.09 per kg, on average. From January to April 2025, the price garnered by Indian tea through exports witnessed an increase of Rs 45.37 per kg from the price fetched during this period last year. The rate of the hike in price of exported tea comes to 18.39%.

Of the total 85.77 million kg of tea exported, 55.23 million kg came from the North India zone. This includes the tea produced in Assam and West Bengal. The tea exported from the country also includes 30.54 million kg of tea from the South India zone. The statistics were revealed in a Tea Board report on region-wise tea exports during 2025 (Jan-Apr).

According to the report, the value of the 85.77 million kg of tea exported from India amounts to Rs 2505.28 crore, at a unit price of Rs 292.09 per kg on average. Compared to the quantity exported this year, India exported 85.95 million kg of tea in the corresponding period last year. The value of the tea exported in the past year was Rs 2120.52 crore, at a unit price of Rs 246.72 per kg.

It is worth noting that tea from the North India zone fetched higher prices than the tea from the South India zone this year. The price fetched by tea from the North India zone in the first four months was Rs 307.66 per kg, as compared to Rs 263.95 per kg fetched by South Indian tea.

In 2024, the country as a whole exported 256.17 million kg of tea, at a unit price of Rs 279.79 per kg. The total value of the tea exported last year was Rs 7167.41 crore.
