GUWAHATI: The Assam government has notified ten more co-districts that will be functional from August 15, 2025. At present, 39 co-districts have been operational in the state.
The ten co-districts and their respective headquarters are Boko-Chaygaon with Boko as the headquarters, Palasbari co-district with Mirza as headquarters, Rangapara with Rangapara as headquarters, Barchalla with Thelamara as headquarters, Mariani with Sukanjania as headquarters, Teok with Kenduguri as headquarters, Makum with Makum as headquarters, Digboi with Panbari Road as headquarters, Dholai with Dholai Bazar as headquarters, and Dudhnoi with Dudhnoi as headquarters.
These ten co-districts have been created from six existing districts – Kamrup, Sonitpur, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Cachar, and Goalpara. The government’s plan is to have a co-district in each of the 126 LACs in the state to ensure effective governance and better service delivery to the citizens.
According to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, this unique initiative is aimed at decentralizing district administrations. “The co-districts will ensure the implementation of our vision of minimum government and maximum governance,” he said.
According to official sources, people will not have to visit the headquarters of districts for matters related to land, MLA funds or untied funds for the implementation of the government schemes, etc. They will be facilitated by the offices of the heads of co-districts that have administrative control over all departments within their jurisdictions. Co-districts will also deal with matters pertaining to food and civil supplies, excise, disaster management, etc., within their jurisdictions.
According to sources, the government made this arrangement to put an end to the demands of subdivisions from people in various areas. The co-districts are updated forms of subdivisions with greater jurisdictional and other powers. This apart, some of the district commissioners’ offices have to cover two LACs, making their work awkward. However, the introduction of co-districts has put an end to this problem, as each of the LACs has a co-district now.
