GUWAHATI/ JORHAT, Sept 8: In order to create better job opportunities and generate more employment, the Assam government has decided to establish a separate Skill Development department. Earlier, the Labour department was looking after employment generation in the State.

The decision was taken at a resolution passed in the cabinet meeting held at the conference hall of the SDO (Civil) office at Garamur in Majuli on Thursday. This is for the first time that a cabinet meeting has been held outside Dispur.

Briefing mediapersons after the cabinet meeting, State Parliamentary Affairs minister Chandramohan Patowary informed that the cabinet has decided to construct concrete roads in entire Majuli. “The PWD department will construct concrete roads in Majuli so that the roads do not get damaged even during floods,” he stated.

The minister further said that all embankments in the island will be turned into road-cum-embankment. “This will be done to facilitate better vehicular movement and help local residents,” he explained.

“In order to protect Majuli from erosion, the government has decided to undertake a mega project to be implemented by the State Water Resource department. A Centre of Water Resources will also be set up in the island,” Patowary stated.

The cabinet also resolved that the government offices to be constructed in Majuli will have a traditiol look depicting its xatriya culture. “The State government also decided to provide full support for security and development of all xatras in Majuli,” Patowary further stated.

Several other decisions were also taken in the cabinet meeting. “The Clinical Establishment Act was passed in the meeting. The Act aims at a better and uniform system of registration and regulation of healthcare establishments in the State,” Patowary said.

He added that the cabinet has resolved to preserve the residence of Bhupen Hazarika at Kuthori, near Kaliabor in gaon district, as a heritage site.

Interestingly, a goof-up with the tiol flag was reported during the cabinet meeting, when the tricolor was wrongly placed before the Chief Minister. However, the error was immediately rectified after it was noticed.
