GUWAHATI: The Assam DGP on Saturday stated that the biggest challenge in tackling cybercrime is not only infrastructure but trained manpower to handle the infrastructure.

He said that the state needs more infrastructures, including police stations, to tackle cybercrime but the training of the manpower required to handle the infrastructure needs time and this has become the biggest challenge.

DGP of Assam GP Singh informed the media that one cybercrime police station will be set up in every district of the state in 5 years' time. This is being done in view of the increase in the number of cybercrime cases in the state in recent times, he added.

GP Singh also said that forensic science in Assam has developed a lot and only samples in complicated cases are sent outside the state for analysis. The forensic science laboratory (FSL) in Guwahati has become more efficient and Regional FSLs are operational in Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh and Silchar. The DGP stated that an FSL will be operational in Jorhat soon. Apart from the SFSL, there is the CFSL that is handling forensics in the city, he added.

The DGP was emphatic on tackling corruption and said no leniency would be shown towards those who do wrong things. "As you sow, so shall you reap," he stated matter-of-factly.

He also said action is taken as soon as information on corruption cases reaches the police. He stressed the importance of follow-up action, including investigation, and filing of charge sheet, to nail culprits.

GP Singh said there should be a clear policy on corruption, so that people held in trap cases are dismissed from service. "There were more than 50 dismissals this year and 15 to 20 of them are corruption cases," he stated.

On the ramping up of infrastructure in the state, the DGP remarked that police outposts would be upgraded to police stations. This will be done in a stage-wise manner. Around 100 outposts are likely to be upgraded to police stations, adding to the 334 police stations in the state at present, he added.

The DGP also had a message for New Year revelers, advising them to be extra careful as more accidents occurred in the months of December and January, during the run-up to Bihu. He advised motorists to be sure to wear helmets and seat-belts, not only in the city but also when venturing out of it. Warning against over speeding, he said more accidents happened due to excess speed of vehicles. He also warned drivers not to drive on the side of the road where vehicles move in the reverse direction.
