Opposition challenge to Gogoi

Guwahati, Jan 2: Opposition parties have pooh-poohed the latest New Year announcements by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, dubbing these as “election gimmicks”. They have demanded a White Paper on how many announcements Gogoi made on New Year Day in the past fifteen years have actually been fulfilled.
“These are nothing but election baits. The people are aware and will not take such baits. It has become a habit of the Chief Minister to line up promises in the new year and in every budget. Most of them have just remained as mere announcements,” AGP general secretary Ramendra rayan Kalita said.
The AGP demanded a White Paper from Gogoi on the number of announcements made in the last fifteen years and how many of these were actually implemented.
In a similar reaction, the BJP said that promises are meant to be honoured and not broken.
“In the last fifteen years, Gogoi has only made announcements. This year’s announcement on creation of more subdivisions is a clear indicator that it was election-oriented,” State BJP president Sarbanda Sonowal said.
“What happened to the Rs 100 crore announced for Dhemaji? What happened to the medical college promised for Lakhimpur? What happened to the Rs 1000-crore package announced for Barak Valley?” Sonowal questioned.
The AIUDF too attacked the Chief Minister, saying the announcements were made keeping in view the forthcoming elections.
“Forget about announcements made in earlier years. We want to know from the Chief Minister how many announcements made on New Year Day in 2015 were fulfilled. Let him come clear about that first,” AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal said.
Claiming that the already existing development councils were in pathetic condition, Ajmal said these councils have only served the purpose of political rehabilitation. “These councils have never benefitted the people or the community they were meant for,” Ajmal added.
