BY-POLLS IN ASSAM: BJP Retains all 3 Seats; AIUDF-1; INC-0

GUWAHATI: The BJP has retained all its three LACs (Legislative Assembly Constituencies), the AIUDF has wrested one from the Congress that has drawn blank in the by-polls held on October 21.

RATABARI: According to results declared by the ECI, BJP’s Bijoy Malakar has won the Ratabari LAC by defeating his nearest INC (Indian National Congress) rival Keshab Prasad Rajak by a margin of 24,001 votes.

Four candidates were in fray in the Ratabari LAC. While elected BJP candidate Bijoy Malakar polled 68,455 (59.15 per cent) votes, INC candidate Keshab Prasad Rajak polled 44,454 (38.41 per cent).

RANGAPARA: Rajen Barthakur of the BJP retained the Rangapara LAC for the party by defeating his nearest INC rival candidate Kartik Kurmi by a margin of 49,599 votes.

Rangapara LAC had five candidates. While Rajen Borthakur of the BJP got 78,301 (66.32 per cent) votes, INC candidate Kartik Kurmi got 28,702 (24.31 per cent) votes.

SONARI: The ruling party also maintained the winning streak in Sonari LAC where party candidate Nabanita Handique defeated her nearest INC rival candidate Sushil Kumar Suri by a margin 15,430 votes.

The Sonari LAC witnessed a straight fight between the BJP and the INC. While BJP candidate Nabanita Handique got 66,698 (54.58 per cent) votes, INC candidate Sushil Kumar Suri got 51,268 (41.95 per cent) votes

JANIA: The AIUDF, on the other hand, wrested the Jania LAC from the INC that stood second in the constituency. AIUDF’s Rafiqul Islam defeated the INC candidate Shamsul Hoque by a margin of 35,141 votes.

Jania LAC had as many as nine candidates. While Rafiqul Islam of the AIUDF got 81,780 (54.35 per cent) votes, Shamsul Hoque of the INC got 46,639 (30.99 per cent) votes.

The party-wise shares of votes are as follows: 2,28,814 (45.2 per cent) votes by the BJP; 1,71,063 (33.8 per cent) votes by the INC; 81,780 (16.1 per cent) votes by the AIUDF; 8,242 (1.6 per cent) NOTA votes etc.
