GUWAHATI: The All Asom Bengali Youth Federation (AABYF) has warned a section of ‘self-styled’ intellectuals who, it said, are out to disrupt the age-old harmony in Assam through its ‘Chalo Paltai’ slogan. The Federation has asked the so-called intellectuals to desist from such a conspiracy to disrupt peace in the State.
‘Chalo Paltai’ is a move in the social media to make Bengali the State language in Assam. The move has been opposed vehemently by various organizations in Assam as it is ‘heavy with a communally explosive angst’. Some of the organizations in the State have even lodged complaints in various police stations against the move and its slogan.
In a statement issued to the media on Monday, AABYF president Kamal Choudhury and general secretary Ajay Bhushan Sarkar said that they would not allow such a move to be a reality. They have said that such a move is against peace and harmony in the State at a time when the Bengalis permanently residing in Assam are blended with the mainstream Assamese society. “We won’t let such a move to become a reality in Assam,” Choudhury said.
