GUWAHATI: As many as 12,992 ineligible families surrendered their ration cards before the State Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) Department from July 1, 2021 to March 2, 2022. It is a response to the appeal made by the department to the rich and ineligible families to surrender their ration cards.

According to an FCS&CA official, the 12,992 ration cards surrendered in the past eight months cover a population of 49,997. The districts exceeding the surrender of 1,000 ration cards during the eight months are Dibrugarh (2,005), Kamrup-M (1,057), Dhubri (1,369) and Tinsukia (1,906).

According to the official, the department is also deleting the ration cards of ineligible families. "The officers concerned of the districts and sub-divisions delete the ration cards of ineligible families on their own, besides adding new eligible beneficiaries to the database. It is a continuous process. Till March 2, 2022, from July 1, 2021, the department deleted 8,932 ration cards covering 38,806 beneficiaries from the database," the official said, and added, "The department added 3,833 families to the database of ration cards covering a population of 12,231."

The state now has around 58 lakh ration cards in the database covering around 2.51 crore people. The department cancelled over 1,70,057 bogus ration cards in three years – 1,35,250 in 2018, 22,412 in 2019 and 12,395 in 2020.
