Asom Baibhav Award goes to oncologist Dr Tapan Saikia

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has named the personalities selected for its highest civilian awards – Asom Baibhav, Asom Saurav and Asom Gaurav – for 2022.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government decided to confer the Asom Baibhav Award to renowned oncologist Dr Tapan Saikia, who dedicated himself to the service of cancer patients. Dr Saikia; associated with Assam Cancer Care Foundation, Guwahati Cancer Hospital, Deepsikha Foundation etc.; is the Director of Oncology Sciences at the Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai. The first Assam Baibhav Award went to philanthropist Ratan Tata in 2021.

Announcing the awards, the Chief Minister informed the media that the government had sought nominations from public organizations and government departments for the three awards. The Cabinet sub-committee finalized the names from the nominations. "We have picked personalities from diverse areas. Their contributions have a direct and positive impact on society. Last year our cash awards were Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh besides citations, lifelong medical expenses and other perks," the Chief Minister said.

For the Asom Sourav award, the Chief Minister named Krishna Roy (art & culture), Gilbertson Sangma (sports, football), Nayanmoni Saikia (Sports, Lawn Bowl), Dr Binoy Kumar Saikia (Science), Dr Sashidhar Phukan (Healthcare and Public Services).

The Chief Minister named Dhritimala Deka (public service, known as smashan bondhu), Debajit Barman (composite farming), Rustom Basumatary (tourism), Manje La (Agro-tourism), Binanda Hatibaruah (Environment and Forest), Atul Chandra Baruah (providing shelter to homeless women), Kalyani Rajbongshi (self-help group movement), Sila Gowalla (an ASHA worker), Dr Jogesh Deuri (agriculture and sericulture), Dr Pankaj Lal Gogoi (Entrepreneurship), Sarbeswar Basumatary (model farmer), Manthang Hmar (horticulture), Dr Dhrubajyoti Sarma (floriculture), Dayal Goswami (Mask Artist, Majuli) and Dr Syed Iftikar Ahmed (AIDS prevention) for the Asom Gaurav award.
