Cotton College gets UGC heritage status

NEW DELHI, July 5: Cotton College is among 19 institutions of the country granted "heritage" status by the University Grants Commission.

As part of its move to conserve the college campuses which are more than 100 years old, the UGC has approved varied fincial assistance for the improvement and upgradation of these colleges.

The Commission had invited proposals from colleges for the heritage tag under the Heritage College Scheme and had received 60 proposals.

Cotton College of Guwahati has received maximum grants of Rs 4.35 crore for conservation of its heritage building.

The colleges which have been granted the status include St.Xavier's College, Mumbai; CMS College Kottayam; St Joseph College, Trichy; Khalsa College, Amritsar; St Bede's College, Shimla, Christ Church College in Kanpur, Old Agra College, Agra; Meerut College, Meerut and Langat Singh College in Bihar's Muzaffarpur.

Others which have figured in the list are Govt. Brenn College, Kerala; University College in Mangalore, Midpore college in West Bengal, Govt Medical Science in Jabalpur, Deccan Education Society's Fergusson College in Pune, Hislop college in gpur, Govt Gandhi Memorial Science College in Jammu, Kanya Mahavidyalya in Jalandhar and St Xavier's College in Kolkata. The UGC will also examine 160 fresh proposals which have been sent by various colleges across the country.

The idea of granting the heritage tags was mooted by the Centre in 2013 to eble the universities to receive fincial grants worth Rs 8-10 crore per annum from the government for the improvement and upgradation of their respective campuses and other academic disciplines.
