Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that dense fog is very likely to occur at isolated pockets over Assam from December 22 to 24. The minimum temperature across the state is also expected to go down further.
Fog and mist are appearing on a regular basis in rural areas of the state, which is also posing problems for vehicular traffic on the highways passing through open areas. Guwahati is also witnessing foggy mornings, and this even led to ferry services between the city and North Guwahati being affected. On Friday, the early morning ferry service between Guwahati and North Guwahati was cancelled. However, the ferries started operating normally after some time.
According to an Inland Water Transport (IWT) official, “Generally during the winter months, fog is very much evident over the river. Today also, a foggy morning was witnessed over the Brahmaputra in Guwahati. This affected ferry services in the morning hours. But later on, the services resumed and operated normally.”
The Regional Meteorological Centre of IMD at Guwahati on Friday released a bulletin on the meteorological features, which stated, “The upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Bangladesh and the neighbourhood now lies over east Bangladesh and the neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level. A cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Assam & its neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level.”
For Guwahati and its neighbourhood, the forecast on Friday said, “Fog or mist in the morning and partly cloudy sky later. Maximum and minimum temperatures are most likely to be 26°C & 13°C respectively.”
However, the denizens of the city expect colder weather conditions during Christmas and New Year.
It should be noted that, in the post-monsoon season, Guwahati registered the lowest minimum temperature of 11.2 degrees Celsius on December 16. This was the season’s lowest temperature recorded in Guwahati, till now.
In the wee hours of Friday, North Lakhimpur recorded a minimum temperature of 5.4 degrees Celsius, which was the lowest in the state. It was lower by 4.2 degrees Celsius from the normal temperature at this time of the year.
