Guwahati: The cyclonic circulation that was present over East Bangladesh and its neighbourhood on Thursday has shifted and now lies over northeast Assam and the neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level. Moreover, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of dense fog across Assam and several NE states until January 27.

Low visibility due to the presence of fog had hampered flight operations at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) on Thursday. The visibility was recorded between 50 and 199 metres at isolated places across Assam. With the Met Office now predicting dense fog over the next few days, it is likely that there will be more such disruptions in air travel.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of IMD at Guwahati issued a weather forecast for January 25, which says, “Light rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, and dry weather is likely to prevail over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura. Shallow to moderate fog is very likely to occur in isolated pockets over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, & Tripura. Light snowfall is very likely to occur at isolated pockets in higher reaches of Arunachal Pradesh. No large change in minimum temperature is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, & Tripura.”

IMD, in its turn, has issued a fog warning, saying, “Dense fog is likely during morning hours over East & Northeast India during the next 2-3 days. Dense fog conditions are very likely to continue to prevail during night/early morning hours in isolated pockets of Gangetic West Bengal till 25, East Uttar Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim & Bihar till January 26, and Odisha, Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura till January 27.”

The realised weather during the past 24 hours, till 8.30 a.m. today, was reported as, “Dense to very dense fog conditions (visibility < 50 metres) reported in some parts of central & East Uttar Pradesh; in isolated pockets of Bihar, Coastal Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Meghalaya, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and dense fog (visibility 50-199 metres) reported in isolated pockets of Northeast Rajasthan, Assam, and Tripura.”
