The ten rivers of Assam and their polluted stretches are – Bharalu along Ulubari in Guwahati, Bega along Mangaldai, Burhidihing along Margherita, Dhasiri along Bokajan and Numaligarh, Digboi along IOCL Oil Town to Lakhipathar Reserve Forest, Kharsang along Kharsang, Kulsi along Chaygaon, Mora Bharali along Mora Bharali, Pagladia along Nalbari Town and Tocklai along Kumar Kaibarta Gaon.
The CPCB, in association with pollution control boards/committees in different States/Union Territories (UTs), have been monitoring the water quality of rivers and other water bodies through a network of 4,294 monitoring stations under the National Water Quality Monitoring Programme. Based on water quality monitoring results, the CPCB assesses the pollution of rivers from time to time.
According to sources in the Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA), the state rivers and other water bodies get polluted mainly due to the discharge of untreated or partially treated sewage from cities/ towns and industrial effluents in their respective catchment areas. According to CPCB, the State government, local bodies, and industrial units are responsible for ensuring the required treatment of sewage and industrial effluents to the prescribed norms before discharging them into rivers and other water bodies.
