KOKRAJHAR: Following increasing use of drugs and other addictive substances by youths, the Bodo National Students’ Union (BoNSU) and former NDFB members have started their operation against drug users and peddlers in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).

On September 16, the BoNSU and former NDFB members caught 15 drug users and peddlers in Kokrajhar and later handed them over to police. Talking to media persons, the president of the BoNSU, Bonjit Manjil Basumatary said that the increasing number of drug users in the society had become a matter of concern and thus they had chalked out special initiatives with collaborative efforts to contain the drug peddlers, users and distributors. He said the time had come to join hands to deal with the drug users and peddlers in a collaborative way. He added that the 15 youths they had caught with drugs on September 16 were mostly students of different colleges and they hailed from Kokrajhar and Chirang. “Hundreds of Bodo youths were killed in the name of operation against militants earlier. These days have passed but now the youths are being killed in a silent manner through drugs,” he said.

Basumatary said that they had a discussion with the officer in-charge of Kokrajhar Police Station on the alarming trend of drug users. He said the use of drugs was not a problem of the Bodo community alone but of every community. He also said the district administration should intensify operation against drug peddlers and distributors. He said many youths who used drugs and alcohol had been arrested and sent to jail but they again start using drugs and consuming alcohol when they are released from jail after 3-6 months. So the main distributors and suppliers should be dealt with firmly.
