DIBRUGARH/GUWAHATI, Sept 1: The flood situation remained grim throughout the State on Tuesday, affecting 8.75 lakh people. Till now, 214 relief camps have been set up for flood victims where 85,076 people have taken shelter. The total crop area inundated by flood waters now stands at 1,43,976.01 hectares.
The Brahmaputra, Burhidehing, Dhansiri, Jia Bhoroli, Puthimari, Beki, Sankosh and Kushiyara are still flowing above the danger level at many places.
The flood situation in Dibrugarh district remained critical, following inundation of 3,178.44 hectares land. More than 70,818 people have been affected in the recent floods, forcing 24,486 people to take shelter in 56 relief camps set up across the district. Normal life in the town municipal area remains paralyzed. Though water level in some of the town areas has decreased, plying of vehicles and transportation of goods is still inconvenient even as three water pumps have been pressed into service.
The worst affected parts in Dibrugarh town are Gavarupathar, liapool, Grahambazar, Tinkunia, Khaliamari, Phulbagan, Boiragimath, Paltanbazar near army camp, Mukubasa, near FCI godown Bordoloi Avenue near Rachael Krish Mandir and Chandler marighat.
Meanwhile local residents of Paltanbazar area here took out a rally protesting against the government’s failure to take necessary steps in containing the flood mece. The protestors also gheraoed the Dibrugarh police station during the protest following which the police had to resort to mild cane charge.
Flood affected people on Tuesday also gheraoed local MLA Prashanta Phukan and pressed him to take the State government government to task for its failure in flood control. Forest Minister Atuwa Munda also visited the flood-affected areas on Tuesday and took stock of the situation.
