GUWAHATI: Ten Myanmar nationals, who have been in jail for the last seven years in the state, have appealed to the Gauhati High Court to either give them refugee status or send them back to Myanmar. The ten persons were arrested for entering India without valid documents.

A two-judge bench of Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Malasri Nandi of the Gauhati High Court observed that the petitioners have admitted that they are citizens of Myanmar convicted for entering the country without proper documents. The petitioners are Saidur Rahman, his wife and three children, and Mahmad Ulla, his wife and three children. The two families hail from Coundang village in Myanmar.

The plea of the petitioners is that either they are allowed to remain in India by granting them refugee status or be deported to their country of origin, i.e., Myanmar. However, the authorities are not taking any decision in this regard.

The Special Counsel of Foreigners' Tribunal has sought some time to take instructions from the government on the course of action it would adopt in respect of the petitioners, the court said.

The court will hear the petition on December 16, 2021.
