GUWAHATI: The Haj Pilgrim Reception Committee has announced that the Haj pilgrimage this year will start on June 4, with the first batch of pilgrims leaving on the same day. This year, there will be no direct flights from Guwahati to Jeddah. All pilgrims from the Northeast will have to take flights from Delhi and Mumbai.

Nekibur Zaman, the chairman of the Joint State Haj Committee, Assam, Meghalaya, etc., as well as of the reception committee, said that 6,302 pilgrims from the region will be going to Mecca this year.

He also mentioned that the new pilgrims from other states have also joined, taking the total number of pilgrims to 6,597. He added that the process for the same will begin on June 2 with vaccination, visa, passport, registration, etc., in the Haji Musafir Khana, in Guwahati. A see-off event will be organized for the pilgrims on June 3. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika will be present as the chief guest, while Minorities Welfare Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary will be attending as the guest of honour.

The first flight will take off from Guwahati on June 4. The pilgrims will have to travel via Delhi or Mumbai this year, as flights could not be arranged from Guwahati.

The advisor of the reception committee, Rekibuddin Ahmed, said, “Usually all the direct flight arrangements are made before for the benefit of the pilgrims. Go First was supposed to handle the passengers from the region this year, but they went out of commission as they went bankrupt recently, cancelling all flights. So the flights had to be arranged via Delhi and Mumbai. Assam Houses in Delhi and Mumbai will be helping out the Haj pilgrims during their travel.” The district-wise breakup of Haj pilgrims from the state includes 1080 from Cachar, 864 from Karimganj, 555 from Hailakandi, 305 from Dhubri, 397 from Barpeta, 240 from Darrang, 368 from Nagaon, 282 from Kamrup (M), 301 from Kamrup, 238 from Goalpara, 156 from Lakhimpur, 135 from Nalbari, 192 from Sivasagar, etc.
