Guwahati: Special DGP Harmeet Singh has been allowed to look after the current duties of Director General of Police, Assam, in addition to his existing duties temporarily till the appointment of a regular incumbent.
He takes over from Gyanendra Pratap Singh, who was released from state services at the end of a two-year term as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam and placed at the disposal of the Central Reserve Police Force for posting as Director General (DG level) on a deputation basis for a tenure up to the date of his superannuation on November 30, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, from the date of assumption of charge of the post.
This was stated in a notification by the Home (A) Department, Government of Assam, signed by Biswajit Pegu, Commissioner & Secretary, Home and Political Department, on January 27.
“The officer is hereby released from the date of handing over of charges,” the notification further reads.
Meanwhile, upon release of GP Singh as the DGP, Special DGP Harmeet Singh, has been allowed to look after the current duties of Director General of Police, Assam, in addition to his existing duties temporarily till the appointment of a regular incumbent.
Currently, Harmeet Singh is serving as the Director General of Civil Defence, Commandant General of Home Guards, Assam with additional charge of Special DGP (Headquarters) and Special DGP (Border) and Special DGP cum Director of Fire and Emergency Services.
G. P. Singh, a 1991-batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer, has been the Director General of Assam Police since February 1, 2023.
Singh had returned from central deputation to Assam as the Additional DGP (Law and Order) in December 2019 at the peak of anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests in the state. He was serving as the NIA’s IGP in New Delhi before being sent back to the state. He was also a part of the Special Protection Group (SPG) earlier.
