GUWAHATI: State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has ordered a performance audit of colleges for their poor showing in the HS final results for 2023. The department has also constituted a six-member committee to find ways to bring down clashes in the run-up to students’ elections in higher educational institutes.
After a thorough analysis of the recently declared HS final results, the department found that the provincialized degree colleges in the state performed the worst, with only a 56.89 percent success rate. The performances of government and provincialzed higher secondary and senior secondary schools are better than those of degree colleges. This has led the Minister to order a performance audit of the HS results, and the principals of the colleges need to explain the reasons behind their poor showing.
According to analysis, 8,068 of the 10,625 candidates who took the HS final examinations from government higher secondary schools came out successful, with a pass percentage of 75.93. On the contrary, only 40,035 of the 70,365 candidates who took the examination from provincialized degree colleges passed the examination, registering a success rate of 56.89 percent. As many as 91,311 of the 1,19,878 candidates who appeared in the examination from provincialized HS schools passed the examination with a success rate of 76.17 percent. Likewise, 42,837 of the 54,671 candidates from provincialized senior secondary schools passed the HS final examinations with a pass percentage of 78.35.
Meanwhile, to curb clashes among students in the run-up to students’ elections in colleges and universities in the state, the committee will consult various stakeholders and submit a report to revamp the system within a period of two months. The committee comprises adviser to the Education Department, Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta, as the chairman; Secretary to the Higher Education Department, Narayan Konwar, as the convenor; and Dibrugarh University’s Joint Registrar, Dr. Paramananda Sonowal; Dr. Brouz Mohan Hazarika of D.C.B. Girls' College; and Prof. Satyakam Berthakur of Dibrugarh University and Dispur College Principal, Dr. Navajyoti Borah, as members.
