IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in Assam till July 6

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall over several districts in Assam until July 6, 2025.

GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall over several districts in Assam until July 6, 2025. The IMD issued its special weather bulletin today.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, the current meteorological conditions are (i) the monsoon trough at mean sea level now passing through Bikaner, Sheopur, Khajuraho, Daltonganj, Digha and then east-southeastwards to northeast Bay of Bengal.

(ii) The upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam now lies over central Assam at 0.9 km above mean sea level.

(iii) The trough now runs from the northeast Arabian Sea to the northwest Bay of Bengal across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, with the above cyclonic circulation over north Odisha adjoining Gangetic West Bengal between 3.1 and 5.8 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height. (iv) The cyclonic circulation overlies north Odisha adjoining Gangetic West Bengal between 1.5 and 5.8 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height.

Under the influence of the above synoptic condition and expected moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, moderate rainfall at many to most places with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places on July 4 to July 6, 2025, along with thunderstorms and lightning over several districts in Assam. According to the forecast, on July 4, heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rain (12-20 cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Barpeta and Bongaigaon, accompanied by thunderstorms with lightning.

On July 5, heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rain (12-20 cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, accompanied by thunderstorms with lightning.

On July 6, heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rain (12-20 cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, accompanied by thunderstorms with lightning.

On July 4, a generally cloudy sky with a few spells of rain or thundershowers is forecast in Guwahati.

 According to RMC, the places where 5 cm or more rainfall occurred in the past 24 hours are Bihubar (Sivasagar) 15 cm, Dibrugarh A/P (Dibrugarh) 10 cm, Naharkatia (Dibrugarh) 9 cm, Maranhat (Dibrugarh) 8 cm, Udaipur (Tinsukia) 8 cm, Bokolia (Arg) (Karbi Anglong) 6 cm, Nazira (Arg) (Sibsagar) 5 cm, Gelabil (Sonitpur) 5 cm, Borpathar (Golaghat) 5 cm, and Lahowal (Arg) (Dist Dibrugarh) 5 cm.

Guwahati recorded a maximum temperature of 34 degrees Celsius on Thursday. This is 1.3 degrees Celsius more than normal. The maximum temperature in Dibrugarh was 32.4 degrees Celsius, 34.9 degrees Celsius in Jorhat, 35.6 degrees Celsius in Silchar, and 32.6 degrees Celsius in Goalpara on Thursday.
