Guwahati: Three towns in Assam recorded below-normal minimum temperatures on the intervening nights of Wednesday and Thursday, while most places across the state, including Guwahati, witnessed foggy conditions. On Thursday, residents of Guwahati city woke up to a foggy morning. In the evening too, foggy conditions persisted in the city.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Guwahati, of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the town of North Lakhimpur experienced the lowest minimum temperature of 5.9 degrees Celsius, which was a departure of minus 2.8 degrees below normal, during the time period mentioned above. Jorhat recorded a minimum temperature of 9.7 degrees Celsius, which was minus 1.5 degrees below the normal minimum temperature recorded at this time of the year. Dhubri recorded a minimum temperature of 13.1 degrees Celsius, which was slightly lower than the norm.
Meanwhile, Guwahati recorded a minimum temperature of 14.8 degrees Celsius.
The IMD issued a report on the weather conditions over Assam and adjoining states, which said, "Mainly easterly/north-easterly winds prevailed over the region in the lower tropospheric levels."
The report forecasted that "dry weather is very likely to prevail over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, & Tripura. Shallow to moderate fog is very likely to occur in isolated pockets over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, & Tripura. No large change in minimum temperature is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura."
The forecast for Guwahati said: Fog or mist in the morning and partly cloudy sky later. The forecast will be effective until 6th January 2025, the report said.
