India’s tea production increases by 37.44 million kg in May 2025

India's tea production, including Assam, rose by 37.44 million kg in May 2025 compared to May 2024, marking a significant year-on-year increase.

Guwahati: Tea production in the country, including in Assam, has marked a significant increase in May 2025 as compared to that in May 2024. There has been an increase of 37.44 million kg in the total tea production during this period.

Assam has also recorded an increase of 12.02 million kg in May 2025 over the tea production in May 2024.

This fact was revealed in a report of the Tea Board of India regarding the estimated production of tea for May 2025. The report states that India as a whole produced 130.60 million kg of tea in the month. Compared to this, the tea production in the country was 93.16 million kg in May 2024. Thus, the increase during the year amounts to 37.44 million kg. Of the total production of 130.60 million kg of tea in May 2025, 112.29 million kg is CTC, 16.76 million kg is Orthodox, and 1.55 million kg is Green tea.

As for Assam, the total production of tea in May 2025 was 62.59 million kg. This is the highest production of tea by any state in the country during the month. Significantly, Assam produced 50.57 million kg of tea in May 2024. The increase year on year amounts to 12.02 million kg. Of the 62.59 million kg produced in May this year, big growers contributed 28.19 million kg, while the contribution of small growers came to 34.40 million kg. This goes to prove that small growers contribute more to the total production of tea in the state.

The contribution of small growers to the tea production in the country as a whole in May this year was also more than that of big growers. Small growers produced 76.82 million kg of tea, as compared to 53.78 million kg by big growers.

In the last calendar year (2024), Assam produced 658.92 million kg of tea. The state's highest production of 114.69 million kg of tea was recorded during the month of October.
