Want to start a business? First, you need to obtain a trade licence from the civic body you belong to. Trade licence is mandatory for every business. For this you need to submit an application, along with all necessary documents. If you submit your application online, you need to submit all scanned copies of necessary documents along with the application. The online facility is available in Guwahati only. The necessary documents which you need to submit are your identity proof, address proof, up-to-date receipts of property tax, rental agreement (if your business establishment is housed in a rented building), commercial holding tax paid receipt, building permission (NOC), NOC from the Fire Service, garbage agreement from the NGO concerned, NOC from the traffic police for parking, the partnership deed (when necessary), registration certificate with memorandum (if the business falls under the Company Act), Pollution Control Board, Assam certificate, etc. Some of the specific businesses need some special documents like bar licence, clinical establishment certificate, occupancy certificate etc.

If you are to do business in Guwahati, it’s Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) where you need to approach for a trade licence. You need to submit your application which is obtained after paying a fee of Rs 100, along with all necessary documents, to the GMC authority. GMC will charge a trade fee, the amount of which depends on the size of your business establishment. At present the trade fee in Guwahati ranges from Rs 700 to Rs 20,000. After the submission of the application a GMC team will visit your business premises and issue you the trade licence within 21 working days.
