GUWAHATI: The State Government has identified 20 higher secondary schools to upgrade their infrastructures under the PM-devINE (Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for the North East Region) scheme. The Ministry of DoNER approved Rs 132.86 crore for the transformation of 20 schools into centres of excellence in Assam.

The 20 schools identified for upgrading their infrastructures are very old ones bearing glorious histories and public involvement. The State Government has made eight packages to upgrade the 20 schools. Package 1 has AK HS Institution, North Guwahati; Ambikagiri Balika Vidyalaya HS School, Maligaon; Vidya Mandir HS School, Pandu; and Dadara HS School, Dadara, under it. The cost of Package 1 is Rs 20.81 crore.

Package 2 has Dharapur HS School; Jalukbari HS School; Rajdhar Bora HS School, Azara; and Arya Vidyapith HS and MP School, Guwahati, under it, with a project cost of Rs 24.31 crore.

Package 3 has Sonapur HS School; Nahargurighat HS School, Maloibari; Gopal Boro HS School, Dispur; Dispur Government HS School; and Bhaskar Vidyapith HS School, Guwahati, under it, with a project cost of Rs 33.24 crore.

Package 4 has Pati Darrang Vidyapith HS School; Puthimari HS School; and Rangiya HS School under it, with a project cost of Rs 23.47 crore.

Package 5 has Ganesh Mandir HS School, Guwahati, with a project cost of Rs 5.74 crore.

Package 6 has Bengali HS School, Paltan Bazar, Guwahati, with a project cost of Rs 3.73 crore.

Package 7 has Banikanta Memorial HS School, Guwahati, with a project cost of Rs 4.06 crore.

Package 8 has Uparhali HS School, Palasbari, with a project cost of 7.23 crore.

Higher Secondary schools have a greater role to play in the NEP-2020 (National Education Policy); and that led the government to take such a measure.

Meanwhile, the State PWD has already floated tenders for architectural consultancy for these 20 schools.

PM-devINE is a scheme announced in the 2022–23 Union Budget. It is a central sector scheme with 100 percent central funding.
