BOKAJAN: Jackson Ronghang (27), the self-styled chairman of the newly floated Karbi Democratic Liberation Front (KDLF), was killed in an encounter with the police at Rongmongve of the Karbi Anglong district on Friday.
Jackson was allegedly behind the December 10 kidnapping of a worker of an under-construction bridge near Rongmongve. A rescue operation was on to trace the hostage. After much deliberations and efforts, the police rescued the construction worker on December 13. However, Jackson Ronghang gave the police the slip.
Following the incident, the police located Rongmomgve in a forested area in the wee hours of Friday and launched a search operation. A gunfight broke out between the police and the KDLF militants leading to the killing of Ronghang. The other rebels managed to escape under the cover of thick fog.
A nearby hospital declared Ronghang brought dead. The police recovered a pistol, ammunition and several incriminating documents from the possession of the slain militant. Jackson Ronghang formed the KDLF earlier this year with a handful of cadres. It was involved in a series of extortion in the area.
"Jackson tried to cash in on the vacuum created after all the six insurgent outfits of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao laid down arms and entered into peace talks with the government," a police officer said.
