GUWAHATI: Established way back in 1653, Auniati Xatra of Majuli started the tradition of holding mahapalnaam in the month of Kati (according to the Bhaskarabda calendar). This is something to cheer about: the tradition of mahapalnaam is still alive in the premier xatra of the state, traversing tumultuous centuries amid foreign invaders.

The six-day-long mahapalnaam began at Auniati Xatra today with the participation of thousands of devotees. Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev was the first to introduce mahapalnam, and in 1653, Auniati Xatra started the tradition of mahapalnaam.

The mahapalnaam that started today will conclude on Kati 30 (November 17). The mahapalnaam is meant for the peace and welfare of human society. Thousands of devotees thronged Auniati Xatra, lit earthen lamps, and prayed for prosperity and welfare.

Speaking to The Sentinel, Xatradhikar Dr. Pitambar Dev Goswami of Auniati Xatra said, “Mahapalnaam has been continued since the inception of this xatra. It is a well-known festival in the Majuli district. From Kati 25 to 28, this mahapalnaam will be during the day only. On Kati 29, the mahapalnaal will be during the day and night, and it will conclude on Kati 30. All bhakats and vaishnabs of the xatra will take part in this mahapalnaam. Lakhs of devotees throng this xatra during the mahapalnaam every year, and this year will not be an exception.”
