Majuli-Lakhimpur connectivity project inching toward reality

GUWAHATI: The proposed ambitious Majuli-Lakhimpur Bridge-cum-Road Project got the final shape. The state PWD (Public Works Department) has completed the tendering process and will award the work order soon to SP Singla Constructions Pvt Ltd, the lowest bidder.

As against the original estimated project cost of Rs 785.364 crore, the award cost will be around Rs 697 crore. According to PWD sources, the process is almost over. The department got the Government's nod for awarding the project work. After getting the work order, the construction company will take around two months to mobilize men and machinery at the project site. It is the rainy season, and the project has two major four-lane river bridges. Thus the construction company will start the project works in full swing, probably from September/October.

It is one of the policy decisions of the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government in the state for road connectivity between Majuli and Lakhimpur.

It is an externally-aided project. Its full name is – 'Improvement and upgradation of road from Balichapori, Majuli to Bongalmara, Lakhimpur, including the construction of two major bridges over Subansiri and Luit'. The completion schedule of the project is 36 months.

According to state PWD sources, the entire stretch from Balichapori in Majuli to Bongalmara in Lakhimpur is 19 km. The length of the bridge over the River Subansiri will be 2 km, and the one over the River Luit will be 700 metres.
