GUWAHATI: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appreciated the Assam Police for consistent usage of the latest tools to enhance safety in the state through NATGRID (National Intelligence Grid).
NATGRID is an integrated intelligence database designed to connect databases of various security agencies in India. It aims to help intelligence and law enforcement agencies to counter terrorism and enhance national security by providing a platform to access comprehensive patterns of intelligence.
In its letter to the Assam Government, the MHA said, "Assam is one of the top five performing states for the period from January to June due to consistent uses of NATGRID solutions."
With the virtues of the NATGRID databases, the Assam Police can resolve terror and crime-related incidents swiftly. NATGRID helps identify, capture, and prosecute terrorists and helps preempt terror plots. According to sources, NATGRID is essentially a tool that enables security agencies to locate and obtain relevant information on terror suspects from a pool dataset of various organizations and services in the country.
According to sources, NATGRID came into existence after the terror attack in Mumbai in 2008. It is accessible to 11 central agencies like the RAW, NIA, CBI, ED, etc., and authorised personnel are allowed access to the platform on a case-to-case basis for investigation into suspected cases of terrorism.
