Guwahati: A mixed pattern of rainfall was witnessed in the Northeast during the pre-monsoon period from March 1 to May 31, 2025. While Meghalaya recorded the highest excess rainfall among all northeastern states, Mizoram, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh recorded huge deficits in rainfall, and Assam received normal rainfall.
During the pre-monsoon period, from March 1 to May 31, 2025, Meghalaya received 982.5 mm of rainfall, which was 37% more than the normal. Usually the state receives a normal rainfall of 716 mm. The excess rainfall is attributed to more rainfall in May. Mizoram suffered the worst deficit in rainfall, with 36% less than normal rainfall recorded in the same period. The state received 362.5 mm of rainfall, against a normal of 563 mm.
Similarly, Tripura recorded 26% less than normal rainfall, receiving a total of 492.9 mm, as compared to a normal of 665 mm.
Arunachal Pradesh also received deficit rainfall to the tune of 24% less than normal, recording a total rainfall of 573 mm of rainfall, against a normal rainfall of 757.3 mm usually recorded during the period mentioned.
Assam, however, received just 3% less rainfall, which is considered as normal rainfall as per IMD’s parameters. From March 1 to May 31, 2025, Assam received 524.8 mm of rainfall, against the normal rainfall of 542.1 mm.
On the other hand, Manipur received 7% more than normal rainfall, while Nagaland and Sikkim recorded 2% above the normal.
Currently, the monsoon season is in full flow. In the past 24 hours, Arunachal’s Itanagar and Assam’s Hajo and Tangla recorded 10 cm of rainfall each.
As per the forecast for June 17 issued by the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre at Guwahati today, “Moderate rain very likely to occur at most places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram & Tripura and at many places over Nagaland & Manipur. No large change in maximum temperature is likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura”.
