GUWAHATI: The National Register of Citizens (NRC) authorities have decided to dispose cases on objections where objectors have been remaining absent during the ongoing hearing process. In a notification issued on May 11, the NRC authorities have further decided not to reveal the identity or address of objector to anybody until further orders. Moreover, on June 15, an additional draft National Register of Citizens will be published. The entire process of hearing on objections will conclude in the first part of June.
As per rules, both the objectors and the persons against whom objections were raised must be present during the hearing process on objections.
The additional draft National Register of Citizens will segregate the names of all ineligible persons that were included in the complete draft NRC published on July 30, 2018. These persons will be given an opportunity to go for claims. An awareness campaign will be launched in the media from the first part of June in this regard.
The National Register of Citizens authority has already issued the necessary direction to the Deputy Commissioners and also the District Registrars of Citizens Registration (DRCR), who have accordingly informed the respective Local Registrars of Citizens Registration (LRCR) to initiate action.
The significant decisions were taken after it came to the notice of the National Register of Citizens authorities that in a number of instances, the objectors were not present during the objection hearing processes across the State. The NRC direction states, “In case of absence of objector, hearing to be disposed ex-parte, and not to be rescheduled. The DOs (District Officers) will be required to record if the Objector was present or hearing was conducted ex-parte in absence of objector.”
Altogether 2 lakh objections were filed against names included in the complete draft NRC. The Supreme Court has already directed that the final NRC must be published not beyond July 31, 2019.
