GUWAHATI: At a time when there are widespread allegations and protests against inclusion of illegal foreigners’ names in the final National Registrar of Citizens (NRC), an official letter dashed off to all Deputy Commissioners and District Registrars and Citizen Registration (DRCR) has dropped broad hints about the truth of such inclusion.

The letter was written by the State Coordinator, NRC, Assam Hitesh Dev Sarma on February 19, 2020. The subject of the letter is reporting of ineligible persons present in the final NRC.

Sarma through his letter has mentioned that it has come to his knowledge that after publication of the final NRC on August 31, 2019, a few names of ineligible persons particularly doubtful voters, declared foreigners and persons whose cases pending in the Foreigners Tribunals are found present in the NRC. The letter also said a list of such persons has already been shared by the Deputy Commissioners.

“As such, you are requested to share the details of such persons who are ineligible for inclusion in NRC but whose names got included in NRC in addition to the list shared earlier,” the letter said.

The State NRC Coordinator has asked the DCs to treat the matter with utmost importance as the details received from the latter will have to be reported to the Registrar General of India (RGI).

The final NRC was published on August 31, 2019. The process of receipt of NRC Application Forms started during the end of May 2015 and ended on 31st August 31. A total of 3,30,27,661 members applied through 68,37,660 applications. Altogether 3,11,21,004 applicants are found eligible for inclusion in final NRC leaving out 19,06,657 applicants.
