NRC update cost rises to Rs 750 crore

Guwahati, May 5: The exercise to update the tiol Register of Citizens (NRC) will cost a whopping Rs 750 crore.

While the Central government had initially sanctioned Rs 288 crore, a fresh proposal has been submitted seeking the additiol funds.

“The proposal is under active consideration of the government,” sources said.

Majority of the funds is being used to pay salaries to contractual employees engaged in the exercise.

State coorditor for NRC Prateek Hazela said that since the target date for completion of the exercise has been rescheduled, the salary burden has increased.

There are some 10,000 contractual employees engaged in the exercise which is being monitored by the Supreme Court.

Hazela said that the draft of the updated NRC is expected to be published in 2 to 3 months time.

So far, verification of 60 percent of the documents submitted by applicants have been completed.

“We had received around 1.5 lakh documents which were issued by other states. We have sent the documents to the respective states for verification, but the response (from the authorities of those states) has been poor so far,” he said.

The PAN cards are being verified through the Union Fince ministry. So far, 31 cases have been filed relating to forged documents submitted by applicants.
