Padma Awards to 5 from Assam on the Eve of Republic Day

On the eve of Republic Day, the Padma awards, one of the highest civilian awards of the country, were announced.

Guwahati: On the eve of Republic Day, the Padma awards, one of the highest civilian awards of the country, were announced. The awards are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.

Jatin Goswami of Assam has been honoured with a Padma Bhushan for his contribution to Art. The Padma Shri has been awarded to seven personalities in the Northeast-four from Assam and one each from Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Nagaland. Padma Shri winners from Assam are Anil Kumar Boro and Gita Upadhyay for Literature and Education, Joynacharan Bathari for Art (Vocals- folk-Dimasa), and Reba Kanta Mahanta for Art. Jumde Yomgam Gamlin from Arunachal bagged a Padma Shri for Social Work (Service); Naren Gurung of Sikkim Art (Vocals-Nepali) and L Hangthing of Nagaland bagged a Padma Shri in the Others (Agriculture-fruit) category.
