GUWAHATI: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has informed Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that initial delay in land acquisition, acute shortage of raw materials, and non-performance of certain contractors are the factors that have delayed the completion of the four-lane national highway stretch from Jorhat-Dibrugarh.

Gadkari has informed the chief minister that 11 contractors have been engaged for the completion of the national highway stretch. He said, “Approximately 12 lakh cubic metres of earth, 11 lakh cubic metres of sand, and five lakh metric tonnes of boulders are needed to complete the project, which remains a challenge at present.”

Gadkari informed the Chief Minister that he had strictly directed the NHIDCL (National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd) to proactively tackle all such challenges and issues on national highways in Assam. “I assured you that my ministry will effectively implement all requisite measures for timely completion of the project,” he said.

Regarding the restoration and maintenance of the 127-km stretch of the Jorhat-Dibrugarh national highway, Gadkari said that he had found these factors responsible for the delay of the national highway project. He said that to facilitate efficient execution, the section from Jorhat-Dibrugarh has been divided into smaller fragments, and the work is going on with 11 contractors. The project encompasses the construction of nine vehicular underpasses, six pedestrian underpasses, and one flyover requiring a substantial quantity of raw materials.
