CITIZENSHIP (AMENDMENT) BILL, 2019

GUWAHATI: The Shiv Sena has reiterated its support to the scrapping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. This assurance was given by Uddhav Bal Keshav Thackeray to a delegation of AASU and NESO that met him in Mumbai on Wednesday. During the meeting, Uddhav’s son Aditya was also present.
Thackeray said, “The Bill is dangerous for the country. It must be scrapped. We will never accept the Government’s stand to protect foreigners at the cost of the indigenous people. The Shiv Sena has been opposing the Bill, and will continue to do so. We’ll take up the issue with other parties to garner their support against the Bill.”
Earlier, the delegation members had thanked Thackeray for his support to the cause, and sought his continued support against the Bill if it is placed in the Rajya Sabha. The student leaders also informed Thackeray that the North East in general and Assam in particular has already turned into a haven for illegal Bangladeshis, and if the Bill is passed, the identity of the indigenous people of the region would be jeopardized. This was stated in a release issued by AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath.
The students’ delegation further referred to the state of the indigenous Tripuris who have turned into minority in their own home State, adding that the indigenous people across the country would be facing similar threats to their very identity once the Bill becomes an Act.
