GUWAHATI: Following an order for review from the Gauhati High Court, the District and Session Judge, Kamrup (M), reviewed the death sentence it had given to Govind Singhal in the Shweta Agarwal murder case. The District and Session Judge now sentenced the convict to life imprisonment.

Shweta Agarwal, a TDC fifth semester student at KC Das Commerce College in Guwahati, was murdered on December 4, 2017 by her “boy friend,” Govind Singhal, in his rented house at Bharalumukh in Guwahati.

On that fateful day, Govind Singhal had taken Shweta Agarwal to his rented residence on his bike. They had a quarrel in the house, where she reportedly died.

Shweta Agarwal was a brilliant student who stood first in the Higher Secondary Examination (Commerce stream), conducted by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council in 2015.

The death sentence given to Govind Singhal was challenged in the Gauhati High Court, which asked the District and Session Judge to review the sentence.
